Herakles

nach Euripides

Premiere 09.02.2024, Kampnagel Hamburg

Herakles is a two-part man. Euripides wrote for him a two-part play. It breaks down in the middle and starts over again as does he.
- Anne Carson

The demigod Heracles is surrounded by myths of supernatural strength, steely muscles, courage and virility. After twelve glorious labors in which he strangled lions with his bare hands, outwitted monsters and fought battles, Heracles returns to his family in Thebes as a celebrated hero, leaving devastation in his wake. How can the returnee deal with the attributions that have stylized him as a supernatural superhero since childhood? How can he deal with the memories of his own great and terrible deeds?
A play about heroes, memories, ageing and breaking - about what remains after deeds are done and how one can live on.
